All gone a wry on the Wrynose Pass

We're stranded! Things have certainly been better. Having had lunch at the Wasdale Inn we took one last look at the snow capped mountains and made for home. There is nothing quite like coming home after a night on the hill, but tonight it wasn't to be. We foolisly listened to the satnav's suggested route and the short of it is we're in the Newfield Inn with the car six miles away precariously balanced 10 metres from the top of Wrynose Pass on black ice! Not sure how we're going to escape this but we have a bed for the night and more on our predicament tomorrow.

That is a steep pass lad. Take care there.

Hi Martin,

Indeed it is and luckily I live to tell the tale! Conditions were bad but it turned into another mini-adventure, of which I'll write a post about once I get my bearings back at home and work. Thanks for following and apologies for the mixed up posting - phone signal was intermittent and I can only think the older post got through before the newer.

Jeepers. That road was scary in August with a 4x4!
I did exactly the same thing a few years ago here in Wales ;)
Good luck!

Well done for getting out there - a lot of us were happily munching on Pizzas at the time...

If this was on the Saturday afternoon / evening then I think we saw you guys struggling to get up the Wrynose. We had just done Pike of Blisco and coming back down saw a car looking like yours struggling, we went down to help but couldn't see anyone there by time we'd got to the pass. Piccies from day on my www.trekkingbritain.com website. We managed to get back down on the Little Langdale side but it was really scary!

Hi Jamie,

What is bizarre about that is we saw you approach the car from the valley and were in two minds as to whether we should head back up in case in was the cavalry!

We watched for a few minutes and then you seemed to head off again so we carried on and managed to thumb a lift to the Newfield Inn in Seathwaite. Grade A guys that helped us that night and the following morning.

The Hardknott pass side was icy but nothing compared to the Wrynose end! We heard reports of the conditions on the Langdale side, again due to the north east facing nature of the slopes and the low winter sun. Good times!

How bizarre that you should come across my blog after being there only moments after our fateful encounter with the black ice!
